I'm a 69yr.old African American Muslim and I've been thinking about the condition of people of color in the U.S.A, Black people in particular, and the people in the" developing countries" globally. The evidence time and time again shows that humanity is trapped in a global contradiction! This contradiction manifests itself in different ways in different parts of the world. The definition of contradiction in this sense is not the same as the definition of dialect materialism. The use of contradiction in this sense is the literal linguistic definition of contradiction, meaning, a logical incongruity, and a situation where actions and propositions are inconsistent or contrary to one another. For example, the writers of the Declaration of Independence stated, "we hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal " yet these men who stated that, owned hundreds of Black slaves and routinely massacred the indigenous people and stole their land. A massive contradiction! In conclusion, even today we struggle with the question of how to navigate these contradictions and how to resolve them, and it seems that the first and foremost thing we as people who struggle for justice and empowerment for all people have to do, is to be honest and true to ourselves as to who we are, where we came from and where we are going! In other words, Man know thyself! And be authentic. Authenticity in a world of images and the worship of celebrity is in and of itself radical and revolutionary! And Allah knows best!

To be honest this idea of artists being manipulated and used by the industry isn't new and didn't start with hip hop. Everybody involved in hip hop in the 70s and 80s before it was mainstream knew they had something that was theirs and that the industry would only destroy it. And that is even before the so-called "conscious" era. But just like prior generations of artists in blues, jazz, R&B and funk, they had to choose between money and principles. The difference however, was that hip hop claimed to "represent the streets" as in the reality that most black folks lived in the inner city, which allowed all kinds of toxic garbage to be pushed. And there is no excuse for that, especially in the era when the NOI was popular (fruit of islam is the inspiration of the S1Ws), Afrocentric scholars and culture was popular and so forth.
